Lillian Burkhalter, affectionately
known as Lil and Burk, daughter of
t he late Edwin Carter Moore and
Charlie Mae Winston, was born on
September 24, 1934, in Plumerville,
Arkansas. She attended Conway
County Training School and later
entered Omaha Central High School ,
graduating in 1951.
Baptized at an early age, she
r emained faithful throughout her life.
Faith was not something she spoke about lightly; it was
something she lived.
I n 1956, she married her beloved husband, Jiles Burkhalter. As
a military wife, Lillian supported Jiles faithfully, including
during their time stationed at Torrejon Air Force Base in
Spain. While overseas, she volunteered with the Red Cross for
f our years — serving families far from home with the same
care she showed her own.
After settling in Omaha, Nebraska, Lillian became a pillar in her
community. She served as President of the Girl Scouts Great
Plains Council from 1987 to 1992 and was an active member
of the Omaha Chapter of The Links, Incorporated. From 1990
t o 2011, she served on the board of the Omaha Economic
Development Corporation (OEDC), advocating for housing
access and economic development.
At age 65, Lillian opened JB’s Beauty Salon in North Omaha
with Jiles and ran it until she turned 80.
